Senior Legal Counsel
This is a position for a Senior Legal Counsel based in Singapore, directly reporting to the Group General Counsel. The Senior Legal Counsel will have primary global responsibility for assisting the select business units which are headquartered in Singapore, but with global operations, allowing for a truly global exposure and challenging work. The selected candidate will also be required to manage a variety of work supporting the other business units as necessary.
Key Accountabilities of Senior Legal Counsel
The candidate will need to act as a business partner for stakeholders in the business units and will also be required to lead/support global legal initiatives aligned with the Legal Function’s strategy. In doing so, the candidate will be required to provide support on legal and regulatory matters, thereby managing, minimizing and mitigating legal, financial and regulatory risk/exposure.
Key responsibilities
- Structuring, reviewing, drafting, vetting and negotiating a wide variety of contracts such as trade and related contracts (sale purchase, supply, master agreements of agreements), trade finance, loan/debt agreements.
- Dispute management (pre dispute discussions, communication and negotiation; litigation; arbitration).
- Advising on and managing shipping and insurance matters.
- Taking the lead of the legal work stream on select strategic investments and divestments.
- Managing and monitoring external counsel/legal spend and optimization of external counsel use.
- Contributing to the Legal Department’s initiatives aimed at larger organisational impact, such as policy roll out, planning and conducting trainings for other stakeholders.
- Providing a broad spectrum of legal support and direction to Olam’s operations.
- Managing intellectual property rights for specified business units.
Communication
- Close interaction the General Counsel.
- Close interaction with internal and external stakeholders including the heads of the specified business units and heads of functions.
- Periodic interactions with management to understand specific businesses and provide regulatory/risk management advice.
Qualification / Experience / Skill Requirements
- Law degree from a common law jurisdiction.
- A combination of law firm as well as in-house counsel experience at top-tier firms and large commodity trading companies with multiple jurisdictional exposure.
- Ability to provide advice to senior management on legal and regulatory issues.
- Maturity to handle sensitive issues.
- Excellent relationship management in a matrix environment.
- Independently driven, high level of initiative and ability to work with diverse cultures and background is key.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
